Individual Empowerment – An instructional workshop in personal safety & self-defence (age 15+)

  • Understand a flinch reaction and how to use it to your advantage
  • Primary strikes, gouges and other empty hand techniques
  • Defence against wrist grabs, collar and chokes
  • How to protect yourself when you’re knocked down and an aggressor is standing over you
  • How to escape being pinned to the ground by a much larger attacker

Who is the target audience?

This workshop is aimed at adults and teenagers, aged 14 and over, who want to learn how to avoid dangerous situations where possible and how to protect themselves if the need arises.

SECTION 1: – Introduction / Resources

SECTION 2: Awareness & Avoidance

  • Personal space
  • The shield / Stance
  • Pushing away from grabs

SECTION 3: Wrist and clothes grabs (Breakaway techniques level 1)

  • Single hand/arm wrist grab
  • Double hand/arm wrist grab
  • Clothes grab

SECTION 4: Defence against grabs and chokes (Breakaway techniques level 2)

  • Front choke
  • Hair grabs
  • Rear choke
  • Bear hugs
  • Headlocks

SECTION 5: Single punch and takedowns (Breakaway techniques level 2)

  • Flinch reaction from a strike
  • Flinch reaction from takedown
  • Palm heel strike / Eye rake

SECTION 6: Empty Hand Strikes and deflection (Breakaway techniques level 2)

  • Punching
  • Elbows
  • Knee kicks
  • Shin kicks

SECTION 7: Protect yourself if you are on the ground or have been knocked down (Breakaway techniques level 2)

  • Stand up from the floor
  • Defences on floor
  • Flinch reaction: closest weapon / closest target
  • Escaping being pinned on the floor
