Lesson 4: Photography Shot Types

Lesson Objective: I can identify different shot types and use them to improve my photographs.

Shot types describe how close or far away you are from your subject. They help you to tell a story through your photos.

Wide Shot

  • Shows the whole scene
  • Subject appears small in the frame
  • Good for showing location or environment

Medium Shot

  • Shows the subject from about waist up (or middle distance)
  • Balances subject and background

Close-Up

  • Focuses closely on the subject
  • Shows detail and emotion

Extreme Close-Up

  • Very close to the subject
  • Shows small details clearly
